چکیده

Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are the chemically evolved descendents of O stars, such that they trace massive star formation. Here we present results of recent VLT/FORS surveys of WR stars in near by spiral and irregular galaxies and consider individual WR stars as progenitors of Type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. Young massive clusters hosting large WR populations may be used as templates for high-redshift Lyman break galaxies.

A large Wolf - Rayet population in NGC 300 uncovered by VLT - FORS 2 ⋆

We have detected 58 Wolf-Rayet candidates in the central region of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300, based on deep VLT-FORS2 narrow-band imaging. Our survey is close to complete except for heavily reddened WR stars. Of the objects in our list, 16 stars were already spectroscopically confirmed as WR stars by Schild & Testor and Breysacher et al., to which 4 stars are added using low resolution F...

Constraints on gamma-ray burst and supernova progenitors through circumstellar absorption lines. (II): Post-LBV Wolf-Rayet stars

Context. Wolf-Rayet stars are thought to be the progenitors of Type Ib/c supernovae and of long gamma-ray bursts. Aims. As shown by van Marle et al. (2005), circumstellar absorption lines in early Type Ib/c supernova and gamma-ray burst afterglow spectra may reveal the progenitor evolution of the exploding Wolf-Rayet star. While the quoted paper deals with Wolf-Rayet stars which evolved through...

Possible binary progenitors for the Type Ib supernova iPTF13bvn

Cao et al. reported a possible progenitor detection for the Type Ib supernovae iPTF13bvn for the first time. We find that the progenitor is in fact brighter than the magnitudes previously reported by approximately 0.7–0.2 mag with a larger error in the bluer filters. We compare our new magnitudes to our large set of binary evolution models and find that many binary models with initial masses in...

The Effect of Massive Binaries on Stellar Populations and Supernova Progenitors

We compare our latest single and binary stellar model results from the Cambridge STARS code to several sets of observations. We examine four stellar population ratios, the number of blue to red supergiants, the number of Wolf-Rayet stars to O supergiants, the number of red supergiants to Wolf-Rayet stars and the relative number of Wolf-Rayet subtypes, WC to WN stars. These four ratios provide a...

The connection between Gamma-ray bursts and Supernovae Ib/c

Context. It has been established that Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are connected to Supernovae (SNe) explosions of Type Ib/c. Aims. We intend to test whether the hypothesis of Type Ib/c SNe from different massive progenitors can reproduce the local GRB rate as well as the GRB rate as a function of redshift. We aim to predict the GRB rate at very high redshift under different assumptions about galaxy...
